Spirit
Spirit came into our lives in the spring of 1999. She was only a little over a year old, and in this short amount of time, we were already her 3rd home. She hadn’t been abused, but she definitely wasn’t receiving the attention, time and space that she needed. It took a few months, but we finally persuaded her previous owner to let her come with us, as we had other ferrets, and more time and space for her. She was extremely happy and very healthy for the next several years, experiencing many adventures.
Last July, she went in for her checkup, along with some of her brothers and sisters. The vet said Spirit was the healthiest of the bunch. She was almost 6 years old by then, and still not showing any signs of illness. Amazing since most of her younger friends had either had surgery already, or were scheduled for the next month.
Sadly, that good fortune was short lived. One evening in February I felt a small, hard lump on each side of Spirit’s abdomen in the exact same place. I took her to the vet, and after some blood work and an abdominal ultrasound she was diagnosed with Lymphoma. It was such a shock since she had been our healthiest only 7 months before.
As the months went by, even though her cancer was progressing, she remained the same old Spirit, full of life and love. Every day she would assure us that no matter how she looked physically; she wasn’t ready to go yet. She was always covering our faces with kisses, constantly staying a half step behind us and trying to escape out the front door or into the garage, and begging for her soup or a Yogi. She always had such a sparkle in her eye, and despite her swollen glands, a little pep in her step. We knew Yogies were bad for her, but they were her favorite treat. The way we saw it, her cancer was terminal and it was just a matter of time, so why not let her indulge?
Spirit stayed with us as long as she possibly could, but the cancer finally got the best of her. When her eyes lost their sparkle, and she no longer wanted her Yogies, we knew the time had come. We helped Spirit cross the Rainbow Bridge on Saturday, September 25, 2004. She was only 6 ½ years old. She is now young again, healthy and free of discomfort, frolicking with all the other kids who have crossed over. Now she too awaits the rest of us to join them at the bridge.
