WOW WHAT A FUN DAY!!!! Hey everyone! Nikki once again. Today was the Ferret Frolic! Now we didn't get our blood tests and shots so we couldn't go in the pin with all the other fuzzies, but we still had a great time outside the play area.  Mommy and Nick took us about two hours later than when it started. We had been there at about 11:30, but when Mommy went to take us out of our carriers and found she forgot our leashes we had to go all the way back home and then go back to the Petco. Once there we got to see Robert, and Char, and October!!! October mentioned about our ears being dirty... and after we got home we had to go through havic of getting our ears cleaned.  It wasn't fun at all!  * Sticks tongue out at October*  We could have gotten away with dirty ears if she hadn't mentioned it to mommy. Well, back to the FUN! We didn't to compete in all the games. I know I would have won the tube races! No doubt! And we didn't get to compete in the climbing game... Which I also would have won.  Nokki did most of the competing. She won shortest ferret at 18.5 inches in length. And lightest ferret at 1.5 pounds. I was in the middle of all so I didn't enter any of those catagories. I tried for the begging contest but, by that time I was far too tired to really show any effort for a treat. Though when we got home I did for a Yogie!!!! Then there was the raffle! Mommy and Nick almost fell over when the letters were called. Mommy said if she had just spent that extra ten dollars on raffle tickets we would have had the grand prize..WE WERE THAT CLOSE! And there was a lot of ferret toys! LOTS! Oh well, Mommy said next year... And next year we'll have all our shots and things so we compete in EVERYTHING and play with all our other fuzzie buddies! We even got to listen to Dr. Cameron speak... except I was asleep in mommy's lap and Noki was asleep in Nick's hat.   What did we win!? LOTS OF STUFF! We won a lot of new food bowls! We won a new cow print sack and hammock. A tube of Nutri-Cal, and a niffty little knitted sleep thingy. We also got lots of treats and some new food! Mommy and Nick played the human game called " Make it in the box"... It's like pin the tail on the donkey, but instead you have to pin the fuzzy inside the litter box. Mommy got it in the corner, but the butt was still over the edge.  Nick should have won. He had it most in the box... Then someone tagged over his. Most agreed he'd won but they had a 'poop off' for five others and a couple who joined in on the last minute. Nick missed it completely!!! And if mommy had just gone up she would have had it right in the box! But someone else, I believe Loki's parents, ended up winning the new litter box and free litter! Oh well, Next year we will take our revenge! * Ferret Dook*.  Poker Night didn't go over real well. Seem's only a quarter of the people showed up... so it was less feet to play with than we had been hoping for, but then we didn't have much energy to play after today. Mommy says next week is the Wine Walk, and if we're good all week long WE GET TO GO! Stay tuned for next Saturday's fun adventure and all those that we have DURING the week! This is Nikki, signing off.
There’s me showing off in the pink t-shirt that I didn’t want to wear, but they made me… sigh…
There’ s my doctor holding miracle ferret Buddy and receiving his certificate, special gift and a bottle of wine.
And speaking of our miracle ferret Buddy, watch for next months issue when he tells you about his new friend Lilly, one of our latest miracle ferrets…
But there are good stories…

Mandy and her brother Kingsley came here from another shelter. After an ultrasound and glucose test on Kingsley, we knew he needed adrenal surgery, but was on the waiting list.  Mandy had a radical masectomy done, but no ultrasound, so we didn't know she also needed adrenal surgery. Off they went to stay in a foster home until the vet bills were paid down enough to get Kingsley his surgery.

At the time, we did not know that the previous shelter was giving ferrets Lupron shots, and we didn't know that it only took a couple of months before the shots wore off.  Little did we know the effects of the Lupron on adrenal disease.  There are three different types of adrenal disease, and Lupron shots had no effect on Mandy's type of tumor. The Lupron only covered up the symptoms, while the adrenal tumor kept growing inside her.  As their foster mom puts it “It took about 6-8 weeks to go from a gorgeous girl with a full, healthy coat of hair to a dandelion right before the wind spreads the seeds.  I noticed she started to show signs of thinning hair on her tail. Within 2 weeks the thinning had progressed, you could see her flesh through the hair on her tail without parting her hair, and she was starting to thin in her shoulders, you could just barely see the pink of her skin. Within the next 4 weeks the thinning had spread to her whole body, and by the last week you could pull out her hair in handfuls. You could see the pink of her skin all over without parting her hair.

Though not at the top of the waiting list, Mandy was rushed to the vet for surgery, and what the vet saw when he opened her up is still beyond belief to me.  An adrenal tumor the size of a tennis ball!  No exaggeration!  Also, the tumor had grown into Mandy's left kidney, so it had to be removed along with the tumor. Mandy was not supposed to make it through surgery, but she did. Then she wasn't supposed to make it through the first night, but she did.  She felt the need to pull through for us, and she is still with us today.  We've decided that she and her brother Kingsley will stay with their foster mom forever.

I recently got to visit the two kids, and Mandy is an entirely new ferret. She was always active and happy prior to her surgery, acting like there wasn't anything wrong, but if you saw her now, you wouldn’t recognize her personality if you knew her before.  I am convinced the adrenal tumors have a major effect on their quality of life.

The picture on the far left is Mandy’s tumor. The jar is one of those Frito Lay dip jars.  This tumor weighed 6 ounces!  The picture of Mandy on the left is right before her surgery, and the picture on the right is Mandy now. What a difference! By the way, if you look at the tumor close, on the bottom left there's a black dot, that's Mandy's left kidney.
Took little Luke to the vet today. The little lymphomic boy with batty ears.  He's such a doll, such a good ferret.  But, he seemed to have peaked at his improvement in health, and I hate to admit, but he didn't improve much after coming here. I did everything the vets suggested, but to no avail, there was nothing we could do.
I kept trying to think there was improvement, but there was not.  Poor kid had constant diarrhea.  I couldn't imagine having diarrhea for that long.  And he ate so much, but wouldn't put on any weight.
I called the vets two days ago and they just happen to have a cancellation for today.  So Holly & I drove up together and took him to see the doctor.
Dr. Cameron did an ultrasound and didn't have any good news for us.  He pointed out that the lymphoma Luke has builds a wall in his stomach that prevents him from absorbing any food, so his body is just eating at itself. That is why he eats so much and is so skinny.  He has no muscle what so ever, and anything we could attempt to do for him would only buy him a month, if that, provided his stomach doesn't burst first.
Dr. Cameron made it very clear that I would be doing Luke a very big favor in letting him go, as he is not comfortable.  I agreed, and they gave him the medicine to sleep first.  He didn't fight, he just looked up at me and put his head down.  I put him in his sleepy sack and cried with Holly.  He was ready to go, and he knew it was time.
He's not in pain anymore.
